We agree that location is crucial. But the most important thing of all is that you find the area you actually want to be in.
The most important criterion does not have to be whether the home has two or three bedrooms. Nor does it have to be whether it is new or resale, or whether it has a sea view. First you should work out: where on the Costa del Sol are we happiest?
Once you have the answer to that, the rest becomes much easier.
Outdoor space can matter more than the square metres inside
When you buy a holiday home on the Costa del Sol, it pays to think differently from how you would at home. Here, we live outdoors for much of the year.
A good terrace, a private garden or a sheltered outdoor area can be more important than a few extra square metres indoors. At the same time, it is worth thinking about how the home works throughout the year.
In summer, shade can be essential if you want to use the terrace in the middle of the day. In winter, the sun is often the best thing about being here. That is why many people prefer a south-facing home, ideally south-west facing if you like sitting outside into the afternoon and evening.
